Third patient contracts legionnaires' disease

A third patient at Brisbane's Wesley Hospital has tested positive to legionnaires' disease.

The man is showing no symptoms of the potentially fatal disease.

Preliminary testing indicates the patient has the disease, however more will be known in the next 24 hours as more tests are carried out.

The funeral for the man who died from legionnaires' disease was held on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland yesterday afternoon.

John Pearson was the first person diagnosed with the disease in the current outbreak.

Queensland Health is investigating why more than a week passed before it was alerted about 60-year-old Mr Pearson's positive test.

A 46-year-old woman is in intensive care after becoming infected by the legionella bacteria, which has been found in the hospital's water taps.

It is mandatory to report legionnaires' disease to Queensland Health, and the delay is a key focus of health investigators.
