Elderly woman stabbed in 'home invasion'

An elderly woman is fighting for her life after being stabbed in the neck during what appears to be a home invasion in Melbourne's south-east.

Ambulance officers were called to the 73-year-old woman's home in Endeavour Hills at around 3.30pm.

They found her conscious but with life threatening injuries to the neck, which were believed to be stab wounds.

She was taken to nearby Dandenong Hospital.

The victim told police she was attacked by a man she did not know.

He is described as Caucasian, in his forties, and may have been wearing a fluorescent vest.

Police say there was no sign of forced entry, but they are not ruling out a home invasion.

Seven News understands the victim shares the house with two other people, but they were at work at the time of the attack.
