David Attenborough has close encounter with Kiwi customs

English broadcaster and naturalist Sir David Attenborough has touched down in New Zealand, but not before a close encounter with those who keep our boarders safe.

The Ministry for Primary Industries tweeted a photo of the BBC veteran with MPI officers and detector dogs.

The dogs, however, seem less enthused with the 90-year-old than the officers did.

"And now, out of it's natural habitat, we see the lesser-spotted Sir David Attenborough," the caption read.

Sir David's A Quest for Life show is on at Auckland's Civic Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday.

A second show was announced after the first sold out soon after tickets were released.

Adding a more in-depth recount of the encounter with Sir David, a post on the MPI Detector Dogs Facebook page said the rare sighting was a privilege.

"It is not uncommon to see celebrities at Auckland Airport, however this morning we were very privileged to welcome the lesser spotted Sir David Attenborough out of his natural habitat and into New Zealand," the post said.

"Here to speak over a few days, it was an honour to meet him and he was extremely generous in having a moment with a few of the team."

The two dogs pictured, Honey and Irwin, posed for the photo with their handlers Hannah and Rochelle.

"A shot that will be cherished around the Detector Dog office for a long time to come."

Sir David's chance photo with the customs crew have been well received by social media goers.

"Customs sniffer dog would have a field day with his legs. Eau de tortoise? Chameleon? Lion? etcetera," Fiona Lake commented.

"I'm so excited about coming up to Auckland to see him on Thursday night 😍," Linda Stewart added.

Steve Benseman added: "The Ed Hillary of the animal world."
