Talk to the Clooneys, cop a $750 fine

Saying hi could cost you more than the fear of being ignored by one of the world's most famous couples.

Superstar pair, George and Amal Clooney are now protected by new ordinance issued by the mayor of the northern Italian town of Laglio, which comes with quite a hefty fine.

Anyone found to be disturbing the occupants of Clooney's Villa Oleandra or adjoining Villa Margherita, or who sets foot on the grounds without permission, face fines of nearly $750.

The new rules reportedly coincide with Clooney's impending 53rd birthday celebrations, and apparently affect parking and mooring boats near the exclusive enclave.

Laglio Mayor Roberto Pozzi is clearly quite the fan of the Mr Clooney, who purchased the Villa Oleandra in 2001.

"He's returned Lake Como to a very high profile, not just in Europe but around the world," Mr Pozzi said ahead of Clooney's nuptials last year.

"Having him settle here was like winning the lottery for us. Following his example, some very rich people have moved in and bought villas which were in a state of semi-abandonment.

"They have restored them at a cost of millions and millions of euros and that has created work for builders, carpenters, gardeners. There are a lot of Russian buyers and now the Chinese are beginning to move in."

George Clooney's wife, human rights attorney Amal, has landed a new job as a visiting lecturer at New York's prestigious Columbia Law School.

The Brit will join the faculty this term as a senior fellow with the school's Human Rights Institute.

"It is an honour to be invited as a visiting professor at Columbia Law School alongside such a distinguished faculty and talented student pool," she said.

The lawyer, who married Clooney last year, represented WikiLeaks owner Julian Assange and is representing Armenia's interests as she attempts to force officials in Turkey to accept the mass killing and forced deportation of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire early last century was genocide.
