Downton bosses ban modern items on set

Producers behind the hit period drama Downton Abbey have reportedly banned modern luxuries from the set following last week's water bottle blunder.

TV bosses released a photograph featuring Hugh Bonneville and Laura Carmichael in character to plug the new season, but the snap hit headlines for all the wrong reasons when fans spotted a water bottle perched on a fireplace in the background.

According to Britain's Daily Telegraph, producers have now issued strict orders to the cast and crew to keep modern items away from the set.

Accessories such as watches and jewellery have also been banned, a unnamed castmember told the publication.

"Modern watches and jewellery are out and so even is modern underwear as the danger is apparently too great it could be seen if we bend over. They have relented in the case of prescription glasses and asthma guns, but that's about it," they said.

The Downton Abbey cast reacted to the publicity crisis with humour, by posing for a snap holding plastic bottles to promote the charity WaterAid.
