7News exclusive: Perry hits back over catwalk talk

Sydney mayor Clover Moore has urged fashion designers to use larger models in the city's upcoming fashion week, but designer Alex Perry has hit back at claims his models are unhealthy.

Moore says the fashion industry is sending out incorrect signals to young and impressionable girls, "If they just focus on the double zero smaller size, I think it could put undue pressure and send the wrong message particularly to young women." she says.

The average size of an Australian woman is 14. Far from what is represented on the catwalk.

Local high-profile designer Alex Perry disputes Moore's comments saying, "I've got a real opinion on how she spends money. So, yes, she can write to fashion week and ask us to use size 12 models, and I'll write and ask her: what are you doing with money?"

Perry has rebutted the assertion that his models are too thin, "You know they're between sizes 8 and 10. Sometimes I'll use a girl that is size 6, but for me she's got to have a good female form."

"I think as a designer you should always use healthy looking models." Perry says.
