Arson suspected after teens taunt family

A 91-year-old woman and her elderly son and daughter were inside their Carina house when it was allegedly set alight by a group of youths.

The family have been taunted by the group, believed to be in their teens or early twenties, for several days, according to police.

Shortly after 10.30pm police were called to the Pembroke Street residence where a patio and garden shed were well alight. The fire quickly spread to the house which was extensively damaged.

A washing basket was set on fire on Friday night and a clothesline at the property was set alight on Saturday night. Both times the family noticed the flames and were able to extinguish the fire.

Last night the family did not notice the fire for several minutes and the home was extensively damaged after flames spread quickly throughout the property, police said.

A 69-year-old man was transported to the Mater Public Hospital with superficial burns and suffering smoke inhalation. A 91-year-old woman and an 85-year-old neighbour are also in hospital suffering smoke inhalation.

Police are currently at the scene and are investigating the suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.
