Beauty pageant erupts into mass brawl

A man suffered machete wounds when a Sudanese beauty pageant turned into a mass brawl in Clayton last night.

Police and dog squad units were called to shut down the party which attracted around 1,000 people at Clayton Community Hall last night. They were pelted with bottles and rubbish when they arrived.

It is believed 15 men attacked two others, leaving one with cuts and the other with serious stab wounds. It is understood a 28-year-old man was struck with a machete, severing his upper lip, and cutting his hand. He was also slashed across the back with a bike chain.

It is thought the attackers also mugged Rana Khalid as he walked to a local shop earlier.

"I am living in fear," he told 7NEWS. "I don't even want to go on the street and walk now."

Residents, who made a number of triple 0 calls, say they are also living in fear.

The party followed the Miss South Sudan beauty pageant Australia. Organisers say the incident has marred an otherwise positive event.

No arrests have yet been made.

Police are continuing their investigations.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
