Perth teacher charged with possessing child pornography

A teacher who was working at a Perth high school has been charged with possessing child pornography.

The man, who cannot be named, was working as a physical education teacher until last month at Churchlands Senior High School.

The school has confirmed the 61-year-old was cleared to work with children, as a holder of a Working With Children's Check.

In a letter issued on Wednesday, the Churchlands principal said the man's criminal record was also checked before the employment commenced.

Police began investigating the man last month when allegations were made about the man taking inappropriate photos of girls.

Officers searched the 61-year-old's Scarborough house and seized a computer and storage devices allegedly containing thousands of child exploitation images.

Police have confirmed the allegations do not relate to Churchlands High School students.

The man has been released on bail to appear in court next week.
