Woman fined $500 after killing Perth cyclist
The family of a cyclist hit and killed on a Perth street say justice has not been served after the driver responsible was fined just $500.
Tom Curtis’s family have forgiven the 21-year-old driver, but said the fine was an insult to the experienced cyclist’s memory.
“We’ve just got to accept it... but it is very hard,” Mr Curtis’ mother Margaret said.
The 59-year-old was riding in Bennett Springs in December 2015 when he was struck just hours before his surprise 60th birthday party.
The driver, Kalamunda woman Caitlin Smith, was originally charged with dangerous driving causing death but pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of careless driving.
“We just need to know what happened,” Mr Curtis’s sister Jacqueline Quine said.
“What actually happened? How did she come to hit him as hard as she did?”
Ms Smith was fined $500 and has her licence suspended for 12 weeks in court on Thursday.
“Even her, she hasn’t won today,” Mr Curtis’s sister Linda said.
“She has to live with this for the rest of her life.”
