Chris Porter took a break from his fruit-picking job in North Queensland after the tragedy to nurse injuries he endured during the murderous stabbing spree at Home Hill in August.

Faced with being booted from the country, he said, “I feel like I’m getting punished for something that is out of my control."

As backpackers were being stabbed in their sleep, Chris Porter raced around the hostel warning people to barricade their doors.

The memory still haunts the 21-year-old, witnessing the death of his friend Mia Alif Chung along with Tom Jackson who tried to save her.

“I still have some nights where I have to lock my door and stuff like that,” he told 7 News.

So haunted by the nightmares and mental attacks in his head, his brother barricades the bedroom door at nighttime in a locked unit just to make him feel secure.

Injured and unable to walk for weeks, Mr Porter abandoned his fruit-picking plans to allow his body to heal. As a result, his visa is now in jeopardy.

“He's been through such a traumatic experience. This is going to scar him for the rest of his life. This next year would have been a fresh start to try and put some of that behind him,” his brother Aaron said.

Mr Porter was hoping that fresh start would be on the Gold Coast with his brother. Instead he's facing the new-year without him.

The Immigration Minister declined to comment today but Chris's visa expires on the second of January.
