Out-of-control driver crashes into parked cars on Gold Coast

Police have found a bag of white powder, believed to be cocaine, inside a man’s Audi which crashed into two parked cars on the Gold Coast.

The 37-year-old driver was found slumped at the wheel, unconscious and barely breathing at the Mermaid Waters crash scene on Thursday night.

“Come on mate, wake up (slap, slap, slap), come on,” an officer can be heard telling the man after pulling him out of the car.

It’s alleged the man lost control of the car around 7pm, with nearby residents rushing to the scene.

Neighbours were so worried the man would try to get away that one man held a shovel to the man’s head until police arrived.

But from there, the man’s condition deteriorated and he remains in hospital in a serious condition.

One neighbour, whose car was written off in the crash, said it was lucky no one was seriously injured by the man’s actions.

“It’s not the best thing to come home to, but it could be worse. No one’s really seriously hurt,” Shane Young said.

“The whole right hand side (of the car) is completely totalled by the looks of it.”

It’s understood the 37-year-old man is well-known to police.

Blood samples were taken from the man at hospital on Thursday night, as officers try to work out exactly what he had in his system at the time of the crash.

On top of the white powder found in the car, police also seized a number of mobile phones from the vehicle.

Charges are expected to be laid at a later date.
