Fatal crash driver gets home detention, victim's partner slams sentence

The partner of a man killed in a shocking head-on crash has slammed the sentence handed down to the killer driver in court on Friday.

Bo Li was behind the wheel of a Mitsubishi Lancer, speeding and driving on the wrong side of the road when he collided with 68-year-old victim Trevor Bird in Houghton, just outside Adelaide.

In court on Friday, he was sentenced to five years’ home detention for causing the death of Mr Bird.

“(Li) has shown no remorse whatsoever,” Mr Bird’s partner Timea Dixon said.

“I’m devastated, he changed my life and changed the life of Trevor’s family.

“If he gets his licence and gets back on the road, how many more people will he take out?”

Mr Bird and Ms Dixon were inside the car at the time of the crash in 2012.

Mr Bird died at the scene while Ms Dixon was cut free from the wreckage and taken to hospital.

“Five years’ detention is nothing compared with what he has done,” she said.

At the time, police were investigating whether Li and another driver were racing.

“We don’t need that sort of hooning and misbehaving on the road because too many people are getting killed,” she said.

“I can never forgive him.”

Judge Michael Boylan described Li’s driving as “reckless” and “unacceptable”.

Li is one of the first offenders in South Australia to receive home detention under new sentencing laws.
