NSW government loses bid to keep Ahmed Elomar in prison

The NSW government has lost an appeal to block the release of Ahmed Elomar from prison.

A prominent member of Sydney's Muslim community, Elomar, 33, was convicted for bashing a policeman during the 2012 Hyde Park riot.

He was sentenced to three years of a maximum four-year-and-eight-month sentence.

The NSW Parole Authority had sufficient evidence to conclude that Elomar held radical beliefs, a judge was told.

He was granted parole last month with the authority saying it wasn't convinced Elomar held extreme views and that the risk of him being radicalised by other inmates was great if he stayed in custody.

More to come.
