Police investigate after student finds baby dumped on verandah

A Brisbane mother is being investigated by police after allegedly dumping her baby girl outside a home in Herston, 7 News can reveal.

A student on his way to university found the infant.

Police have no idea how long she had been alone.

The beautiful baby girl was found asleep and abandoned, left alone on the front verandah of a student share house.

Long Nguyen found the three month old at around lunchtime on Sunday.

“I was about to go to school and as I walked on the front porch I discovered that there was a baby girl,” he said.

“For awhile I was quite in shock… because I really didn't know what was going on, it took me a few minutes to just calm myself down."

The PhD student took the tiny bub inside and called police.

“She woke up and started crying and I tried to calm her down, I turned on the TV and let her watch some cartoons, but well, that didn't really help,” Mr Nguyen said.

Seven News understands the child's mother, along with her baby and toddler, were reported missing by her husband early yesterday morning.

They hadn't been seen for more than 24 hours.

Australian Federal Police officers found the baby's mother wandering the carpark of the International Airport yesterday afternoon. Her two year child was with her.

Police are still trying to determine what the woman was planning to do.

Investigators don't know how long the little girl had been left outside but they were grateful she was taken in.

“Later that day I got a call saying she's ok now, she's been reunited to her extended family so I think that's very good,” Mr Nguyen said.
