Man and woman arrested at gun point following police chase

A man and woman have been arrested at gun point after a dramatic two-and-a-half hour high-speed Air Wing pursuit through Victoria.

The chase began in Wangaratta around 12pm, after the 21-year-old man and female passenger, 20, were spotted in a Holden Commodore which matched the description of a vehicle police were looking for as part of an ongoing investigation

The patrolling unit which spotted the pair, did a U-turn to try and intercept the vehicle which sped off down the Hume Freeway.

The vehicle travelled at more than 140km an hour and narrowly avoided crashing into a number of other cars, as the pair made their way down to Melbourne.

The police Air Wing monitored the vehicle from a distance as it continued to travel to the north and western suburbs of the city.

The 7 News helicopter captured the moment the pair crashed their vehicle while trying to cross a busy intersection in the Melbourne suburb of Braybrook around 2.30pm.

The vision shows the dark coloured vehicle mounting the footpath, to get around traffic stopped at the lights.

The car then drives straight across the road and squeezes in between two cars waiting to turn right at the lights, before smashing into another car.

The 21-year-old man, of no fixed abode, and 20-year-old Wangaratta woman were then arrested at gunpoint in a Ballarat Road hotel car park a short time later.

They are currently in custody, assisting police with their enquiries.

There were no injuries during the collision.
