Cabbie hid in stranger's home to escape horror racist attack
A cab driver who was followed home by a racist gang and threatened with a machete and baseball bats has told 7News he ran as far as he could in an attempt to save his own life.
Davinder Singh was farewelling friends outside his home on October 26 when four people walking past shouted racial taunts turned violent.
“He just push on my chest and push me back,” Mr Singh said.
“They said to me, 'you guys are going to have a bad night’.”
The gang made good on their promise.
Hours later, Mr Singh was sitting in his cab when the men returned carrying weapons.
“I feel a bit scary, you know what I mean? The guys have a knife and baseball sticks,” he told 7News.
Mr Singh drove off but there were vehicles waiting, which began to chase him.
Near a roundabout, they cut him off, and forced him to stop. A machete was used to smash the windscreen.
He managed to drive off again but one man clung to the bonnet for 400 metres.
“I just stopped right there in the middle of the road. I stopped the car and run through the street,” Mr Singh said.
“As far as I can run and hide myself in someone's house.”
Mr Singh and his friends were so afraid of reprisals that they decided to move house.
They say they've never experienced racism or violence like this before.
“I don't really feel safe,” he said.
It's hoped someone will recognise the offenders from pictures taken by the cab's security cameras.
