Desperate migrants try to hitch a ride with polar bear

Three migrants proved they were so desperate to enter the UK that they got into the back of a truck with a young male polar bear for company.

Footage filmed by another driver which was broadcast on CNN shows one hooded man open the door of the truck while it was stuck in traffic in Calais, northern France.

While some stop and stare at the bear, three individuals quickly jump up into the truck without hesitation.

They go in behind the bear's cage and try and hide, while another man shuts the truck door and the rest of the group disappear into the darkness.

However the migrants did not get very far and were very soon intercepted by police.

Nissan the polar bear was travelling from Russia to his new home in Yorkshire, England when the unusual incident occurred.

Nissan was transported in climate controlled conditions during his journey by air, road and sea that took him from his former home in the Russian capital.

Simon Marsh, YWP Animal Manager said: “Nissan is settling in really well and it is great to have him here.

"He is in the house at the moment while he gets to know his surroundings, the rangers who will be looking after him and will also get to know Victor and Pixel.

"Every animal takes a different length of time to settle in but we are sure he will be out so that people will be able to see him over the next few weeks.”
