Baby pulled from a burning car outside daycare centre

The shocking moment was captured on video.

Remarkable video shows a life threatening drama outside a daycare centre in Sydney's eastern suburbs.

A mother and her baby escaped their burning car on Victoria Road at Bellevue Hill on Wednesday morning.

Cameras captured the dramatic moment fire took hold of the family car. A mother and her baby had been inside just moments earlier.

"Oh my god he's just a man with a hose," a witness is heard saying.

Gayle Kelly told 7News she was forced to pull over when she saw smoke coming from the engine and had to race to grab Casper from the back seat.

A passing tradie picked up a hose to fight the flames until fire fighters arrived.

"He was amazing like he just came running down the road with a hose and he was so brave I mean literally there were flames coming out the car he was amazing," Kelly said.

They brought the blaze under control, comforting mum and baby after the ordeal.

"I saw the aftermath of the car and like the whole front was completely charred," another witness said.

The entire drama unfolded just outside a child care centre.

"She'd just filled it up with petrol as well so all she was thinking was that it was going to blow up," Gayle's husband Jon Kelly told 7News.

"She's really trying to come to terms with what could have happened but really thankful that it didn't and there was people there to help out."

The tradesman who helped was praised for his quick thinking and bravery.

"The behaviour of people when there's an emergency in the community astounds us sometimes," NSW Fire & Rescue's Inspector Tom Cooper said.

Despite being shocked, Gayle Kelly says she is okay and so is Casper.

She has thanked all those who came to their aid.
