Dozens of families are spending another night with friends or relatives, as they are unable to return to their homes around the Georges River, in Sydney's south.

Among those putting on a brave face is Sam Testalimuta, whose house has been covered in thick, watery sludge.

Over a metre of water invaded his living room when the Georges River swelled and broke its banks on Wednesday night.

“It's been devastating, devastating hey,” he told 7News.

The water rose within ten minutes and the family lost everything.

“It was scary because the water was coming up from the concrete like a fountain,” he said.

The river was expected to peak at 3.5 metres, but it rose to two metres before it began overflowing.

While the wild weather is over, the massive clean up is only beginning.
