Teenage mum dies 48 hours after giving birth to twins

A teenager who 'couldn't wait to be a mum' has tragically died before she got to meet her newborn twins she had just given birth to.

Sophie Burgess, 19, died 48 hours after giving birth to Oliver and Evie eight weeks early after suffering from stomach cramps.

Sophie and her partner Alex Carter rushed to their local hospital and were then transferred to Wolverhampton New Cross Hospital in Telford, England.

She was able to give birth to Oliver naturally but she was rushed in for a Caesarean section to safely deliver Evie.

Sophie ended up contracting septicemia and was rushed into a critical care unit where she later died on March 11, without meeting either of her children.

Miss Burgess's mother, Mandy, told the Shropshire Star, that the family did not know what had caused the 19-year-old to contract septicemia which is poisoning in the blood.

The bereaved mum said: "Sophie contracted septicemia after giving birth to her twins, the reason behind this is still unknown but the hospital have been conducting their own investigations."

Family friend Ria Norris has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for the twins' dad to help care for them.

She said on the page: "The twins were born 9 weeks prematurely weighing just over 3lb each and are currently still in the neonatal unit."

Miss Burgess' brother Craig has paid tribute to his little sister by describing her as 'amazing'.

He said he never wanted his sister to be forgotten and that Sophie would have been proud of her partner Alex and their children.
