Man, 29, charged over alleged rape of child in Alice Springs town camp

A 29-year-old man has appeared in court over the alleged rape of a child in a town camp on the outskirts of Alice Springs.

The man appeared in the Darwin Magistrates Court on Monday, charged with one count of sexual intercourse with a child under 10 and one count of sexual intercourse without consent.

The accused cannot be named for legal reasons and proceedings were conducted in a closed court.

It is alleged the man took the child from near the parents' home in the town camp late Saturday afternoon.

The child's family has alleged the child was dragged away while walking home and assaulted in bushland in the middle of the town camp.

It is understood the child is being treated in the Alice Springs hospital.

The accused has been remanded in custody and will next appear in court on May 13.
