There has been an overwhelming public response to help the dozens of families who have lost everything in the Adelaide Hills bushfire.

Relief centres say they are touched by the outpouring of donations, but they are now appealing for money rather than goods.

A steady stream of food, clothes, toys, books and blankets have been dropped at centres across Adelaide.

At the Animal Welfare League, volunteers were kept busy tackling mountains of donations of pet food and goods for the animals touched by the fires.

Relief centres are now appealing for cash donations.

They are directing people who wish to make donations to the following groups:

State Emergency Relief Fund

The CFS Foundation

The Salvation Army

The Red Cross

For animals, the RSPCA and Animal Welfare League are asking for food, bedding, toys and money.
