Freund wins to halt Fannemel's Russian double bid

Berlin (AFP) - Germany's Severin Freund prevented Norway's Anders Fannemal from winning back-to-back World Cup ski jump rounds in the Russian Urals on Sunday in a weather-hit event.

Freund, 26, claimed his first win of the season and 10th of his career on the Nizhny Tagil hill where the competition was reduced to one jump because of dangerous, high winds.

Freund won with 145.7 points with Fannemel in second on 143.3, in a performance which kept him on top of the overall World Cup standings.

Austria's Stefan Kraft put in the longest jump of the day but his 138m was only good enough for 141.1 points and third place.

1. Severin Freund (GER) 145.7 pts (131.5 m), 2. Anders Fannemel (NOR) 143.3 (135.0 m), 3. Stefan Kraft (AUT) 141.1 (138.0 m), 4. Gregor Schlierenzauer (AUT) 140.9 (135.0 m), 5. Michael Hayboeck (AUT) 139.8 (131.0 m)
