Grandmother 'kills' son and baby granddaughter

A grandmother allegedly killed her disabled son and his baby daughter before trying to take her own life.

Sylvia Majewska, 65, allegedly slit the throat of her 29-year-old son, Daryne Gailey, because she believed he would be better off dead.

She is then thought to have turned her attention to her seven-month-old granddaughter Charley Hendrick, before attempting to slit her own wrists.

Police say they found her sitting on the couch in her home with a slashed wrist, “bleeding into a bucket” after the mother of Charley reported her missing.

Mrs Majewska, from Michigan, US, allegedly killed the two members of her family on November 22, reports the Detroit Free Press.

Majewska was accused of two counts of first-degree murder and is being held under guard as she recovers from her self-inflicted injuries.

Police say there is no known motive, but described Majewska as a controlling mother who was often abusive to her disabled son.

“For whatever reason, (Majewska) came to the conclusion that her son and her grandchild would be better off dead,” said Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.

Baby Charley was found “dressed and tucked away like it was going to sleep — very sad,” said Mr Bouchard.

Charlie’s father was recently divorced, having only been married to the mother of his child for six months. Mr Majewska's mother had disapproved of the union.

“She was very much in charge, berating him, in that encounter in the store,” said Mr Bouchard.

Majewska was the guardian for her son, and filed for divorce on his behalf, saying he was not mentally competent to be married. The divorce was finalised three weeks before his death.
