Darwin airport bust: Passenger allegedly nabbed with backpack of drugs

An airline passenger has been busted allegedly using a backpack to smuggle cocaine, methamphetamine and MDMA into Darwin.

Drug detectives met the 25-year-old man at the airport when he flew in from Brisbane on Saturday night.

Police said in his bag they found 28 grams of cocaine, 160 grams of methamphetamine and 1,800 MDMA pills.

Another man, 45, and a woman, 26, were also arrested in the domestic terminal.

"A further search was conducted on 45-year-old man's residence where detectives seized 22 grams of cocaine, three grams methamphetamine, 2.48 grams of MDMA, digital scales, a number of mobile phones, a laptop and other drug paraphernalia," Detective Superintendant Tony Fuller said.

The two men are to face Darwin Magistrates Court on Monday to face a number of charges, including possess cocaine (trafficable quantity), supply cocaine, supply MDMA in a commercial quantity and possess tainted property.

The woman was bailed, charged with administering dangerous drugs and possession of a dangerous drug.

Detective Superintendant Tony Fuller said his officers were discovering more methamphetamine in the NT.

"We've had quite a few in the last month some pretty significant amounts of methamphetamine, which is a bit disturbing but certainly have seized a lot more than usual in the last month or two," he said.

"Certainly not a very nice drug - it's a highly addictive and people become very irrational on it so it's certainly one that we don't like seeing in the community but it's out there so we're certainly targeting it."

He said more arrests were expected.
