Olympic champion Wilson retires

London (AFP) - The British shooter who was coached to an Olympic gold medal by a member of the Dubai royal family has retired, it was announced Friday.

Peter Wilson, who won double trap gold at the London 2012 Games, after his career was revived by coming under the guidance of Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum, the 2004 champion, said he had achieved all he had wanted to as a competitor in the sport.

"With regret I have decided to give up competitive Olympic double trap," said the 28-year-old, whose final international appearance saw him win gold at the Al Ain World Cup last year.

"Since having achieved the goals I set myself -- world record, world number one, and Olympic gold -- I have struggled to find a new incentive to compete."

As well as being crowned Olympic champion, Wilson also won three World Cup golds and one silver, as well as a European silver and junior gold.
