Fisherman dad's body found in NSW lake

The body of a Sydney father who slipped when he went into a lake on the NSW mid-north coast to retrieve his son's shoes has been recovered.

The 32-year-old from Berala, in Sydney's south-west, was on holiday at Wallis Lake, near Forster, with his wife and two children when he slipped under water near the shore at the popular fishing spot.

It's believed the man, who was not a strong swimmer, entered the water to try and grab a pair of shoes.

"The family said he was a poor swimmer and the weather here (Wednesday) was really quite atrocious, it was windy, it was quite tidal," Inspector Charne Musgrove told AAP earlier on Thursday.

The man's body was located near Regatta Island just after midday on Thursday, police said.

Marine rescue, water police and lifesavers spent Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning searching for the man while SES volunteers scoured the foreshore.

Police divers arrived at the lake on Thursday morning to help in the search.
