Three people narrowly escape Gold Coast housefire

Three people have had a narrow escape after a housefire at Mainbeach overnight.

A young woman woke to the smell of smoke around 2.30am (AEST) and quickly alerted her brother and his girlfriend who were also inside.

The trio first tried to escape through a downstairs exit, but couldn't find a key to get out.

Resident, Antonia Schmarr said "It was pitch black, it was covered in smoke, we all sort of panicked a bit but then my brother remembered that his door, you don't need a lock to get out."

They immediately ran next door and woke their sister and grandmother in the adjacent house.

Fire crews arrived a short time later and used a crane to extinguish the blaze.

"I've pretty much lost everything," Ms Schmarr said.

"I mean I'm alive, I've got my family so I'm still happy but it sucks."

The blaze is believed to have started in the garage.

Fire crews are investigating.
