New mum loses husband one week after giving birth
A woman who unexpectedly gave birth to her first child in the back of a cab while holidaying in Fiji has lost her husband just one week after he returned home to Australia.
Jayne and Ashley Wren from Port Macquarie made headlines when their daughter Maddi came into the world much earlier than anticipated while the couple were visiting Nadi for a friend's wedding.
Instead of enjoying what’s usually a blissful period for first-time parents, the couple were faced with having to come up with $60,000 to cover the costs of having a baby internationally, which they didn't specify in their travel insurance because they were travelling before their baby's due date.
The community rallied and more than $20,000 was raised on mycause.com.au to 'Bring Maddi Home'.
Tragically, new father Ashley died of a heart attack when he returned home to Australia on Friday.
His sudden death has shocked the community, with mourners taking to Facebook to write messages of support for wife Jayne.
"The tears flow and words escape us in disbelief," said one friend.
A triathlete and teacher at St Columba Anglican School, Ashley was loved within his local area by students and teachers alike.
“From his friends and training partners in the club, we want to show our support to his wife and baby,” Port Macquarie Triathlon Club vice-president Jo Pilgrim told Port News.
“We want her to know she is not on her own - there are people here to support her.”
