Police help deliver baby girl

Officers have come to the aid of an expectant couple, helping to deliver a baby girl in the car park of a police station.

The pair pulled into the Indooroopilly Police Station at about 5.30am (AEST) this morning.

The woman was having contractions and didn't think she could make it to the hospital in time.

And her impatient little girl made sure she couldn't, being born a short time later in the front seat of her car.

The Queensland Ambulance Service guided two female constables through the delivery of the baby, over the telephone.

Three male officers were also on scene to help. They brought blankets to the car and assisted in making sure the area was private, while the anxious father waited nearby.

Superintendent Brian Connors has commended the officers.

'Policing is often about rising to the challenge in unexpected situations. In our job you never know what will happen next. The two constables involved in delivering the little girl did an exceptional job,' he said.

The mother and baby were taken to the Mater Mothers' Hospital in good spirits.
