Almost 500 arrested in police crackdown

Police have wrapped up their four night crackdown on alcohol-fuelled violence.

Now in its eighth year, Operation Unite continues to focus on the implications associated with the misuse of alcohol in public places; including crime, health and injury problems and the impact on policing.

In total 1180 officers were deployed as part of the operation across Queensland, who conducted 17,048 random breath tests and made 490 arrests.

In the final night police made 85 arrests, 54 of those in Brisbane.

A total of 43 assaults were recorded across Queensland and 94 drivers were detected drink driving.

'While these numbers reflect that there are still a significant number of people who are using alcohol and then putting others at risk by driving and becoming involved in altercations, it also shows that our officers are out there tackling this issue head one,' said Deputy Commissioner Specialist Operations, Ross Barnett.

He said,' We want everyone to enjoy the wonderful lifestyle that Queensland officers, and we want everyone to remember that their actions whilst intoxicated can have a negative and long-lasting affects on their and others lives.'

Police hope through continued commitment attitudes will change and numbers will drop next time the operation is run.
