Good Friday Appeal 2014

Victorians have opened their hearts and wallets to raise a record-breaking $16.8m for sick children.

Generous Victorians have been digging deep for the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal to beat last year's total of $16.4 million.

The final tally of $16,846,396.09 was announced at midnight following a mammoth all-day public event.

Hundreds of volunteers collected donations in the phone room as fundraising events were held across the state.

The day is the culmination of annual fundraising from hundreds of community groups and organisations.

Among them, Baker's Delight served up a big cheque, construction workers tipped in $12,000 and Dame Elisabeth Murdoch College students raised $63,000.

The fundraising efforts were varied, from easter eggs hunts to skydiving at Tooradin Airport.

The Qantas mystery flights have raised more than $2 million over the years.

The charity home built by Villawood Properties and Henley Homes was also sold, giving a $717,000 boost to the appeal.

This year, the telethon had a new place to call home.

The annual event took over the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, with the massive space filled with the Channel 7 telecast and Kids Day Out activities.

The appeal has raised more than $258 million for the Royal Children's Hospital since it began in 1931.

The funds raised from this year's telethon will go towards equipment, research and education.

The Good Friday Appeal telethon was broadcast live on Channel 7 across Victoria and via live-stream on our website.

This year, two-year-old Riley Twomey is encouraging Victorians to dig deep and donate to the appeal.

The toddler, from Wangaratta, has the blood disorder haemophilia – a condition where the blood does not contain enough clotting factors to control bleeding.

His brave smile is on posters across Victoria as the face of the 2014 Good Friday Appeal.
