Wrong-way truck driver facing charges

A truckie is accused of driving on the wrong side of a Melbourne freeway for at least 15 kilometres before being stopped by police.

Motorists saw the semi-trailer slowly travelling south in the north-bound lanes of the Hume Freeway about 4.30am (AEST) on Wednesday.

The driver ignored initial directions from officers to pull over but was eventually stopped in Campbellfield, police said.

"We were pretty keen to get this truck stopped, certainly before he headed to the (Metropolitan) Ring Road," Sergeant Dean Pickering said.

"If the truck got onto the Ring Road it may have been a fairly horrible situation for a lot of people."

The 64-year-old Shepparton man returned a positive reading in a roadside drug test, police said.

"He was in a confused state," Sgt Pickering added. "He was under the influence of something and that was making him behave in a non-rational manner."

The driver is facing traffic charges including conduct endangering life.

Police say the truck may have been involved in an earlier collision, as it had damage to its mirrors and grill.
