Melbourne extends city shopping hours

Melbourne is extending city shopping hours.

Melbourne Mayor Robert Doyle announced the extended retail trading hours for almost 1000 shops in Melbourne's central shopping precinct.

All retailers within two blocks from La Trobe Street to the Bourke Street Mall will stay open until at least 7pm every night.

"We will be giving people greater flexibility, meeting peoples' lifestyles and of course, creating jobs," Mr Doyle said.

Late night trading will continue until 9pm on Thursday and Fridays as normal.

The extended trading period will begin on April 22 when the first stage of the $1.6 billion Emporium Melbourne complex is completed.
