Woman dies in house fire on NSW South Coast

A woman has died in a house fire at Gerringong on the New South Wales South Coast.

It's believed an elderly man managed to escape the blaze after jumping for his life from the first floor.

He has been flown to Royal North Shore Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Fire crews were called to the home on Osborne Street around 1pm.

An ambulance spokesperson said the man, thought to be 90 years old, suffered burns to his face and body.

He is in a serious condition.

Almost 30 freighters are on scene and smoke from the blaze can be seen at least 10 kilometres away.

Neighbours said they heard explosions as parts of the home exploded.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.
