Police appeal for information over grandmother's mystery death

Police appeal for information over grandmother's mystery death

A Melbourne grandmother had been planning her 70th birthday before she was found slain in her inner-city apartment, police say.

A neighbour discovered the body of 69-year-old Jeanette Moss in her Middle Park home around 10.45am (AEDT) on Wednesday, during the start of the city's week-long heatwave.

Police are treating the death as suspicious and trying to find anyone who saw her in the 24 hours before she was found.

Homicide Squad Detective Inspector John Potter says there are no suspects in her death, but it's possible she knew her killer.

He said the door to her flat was locked, nothing was stolen, and it's possible Ms Moss, who was well-known in the area, had even opened the door to the person who killed her.

"She certainly was a popular character and enjoyed life," he told reporters.

"She was planning her 70th birthday party, which was coming up, and she clearly had everything to live for."

Police have only revealed that Ms Moss suffered "injuries" and are withholding further details on a cause of her death.

A neighbour was going to take Ms Moss to a doctor's appointment, but when she never showed up she used a key to open the door to her flat and discovered the body.

Police will not say where she was found inside the apartment, only revealing that there were no obvious signs of a struggle.

Ms Moss, a widow with four grandchildren, was last seen running errands and doing some shopping on Tuesday morning in the local area in her 1997 green BMW.

An information caravan will be run by police on Tuesday outside Ms Moss's home until 6.30pm in the search for more clues.
