Christmas casual jobs likely to suffer in Adelaide

Retailers in Adelaide’s main shopping strip Rundle Mall are not expecting a bumper festive season, with many not planning to hire Christmas casuals this year.

Now Halloween is out of the way, workers in Rundle Mall were busy today starting work on installing Christmas decorations - but there are worrying signs for businesses.

Retailer Albert Bensimon told 7News festive season sales were looking more promising interstate.

“Compared to our stores in WA and Queensland, we’re hiring casuals in those states, we’re not hiring them in South Australia,” he said.

It is a sentiment supported by the Australian Retail Association, meaning summer job seekers may miss out.

The state government has pointed the finger at buyers shopping behind the keyboard.

“What we have seen over the last few years is that Christmas period getting later and later… the effect of more online shopping,” small business minister Tom Kenyon said.

It is hoped new international flights from Air Asia and the start of the cruise ship season will help a boost turnover, and some retailers are confident they will still cash in this Christmas.
