Man orders safe, finds 130kg of drugs inside

It's not uncommon for online retailers to provide free samples, but one safe manufacturer may have gone a little too far in demonstrating its diverse product range.

An Ohio man ordered the five-feet-high- Champion Trophy 42 model gun safe to store his collection of rifles, expecting to find it empty on arrival.

When he opened the door, he found 130 kilograms of marijuana wrapped in ten tightly-sealed bundles.

“I’ve been in law enforcement for 47 years and I’ve never seen anything like this,” Sheriff John Lenhart told WLS radio. “It’s quite effective if you think about it: wrapped airtight to withstand high temperatures. Drug-sniffing dogs probably couldn’t smell it.”

Police investigations revealed that the safe was manufactured in Nogales, Mexico, using prison inmate labor. It was transported to an outdoor sports store and then delivered by an independent trucking company to the dumbfounded recipient.

“Someplace between Mexico and the warehouse in Northern Ohio, the drugs got mixed up and put in the wrong safe and got delivered to the wrong person,” Lenhart said.

He added that authorities have been unable to contact the driver of the delivery vehicle.

"Not only are we looking for him, but the bad guys are, too."
