Man in hospital after Sydney 'gun attack'

Police are searching for a group of men wanted over a bashing in Sydney's Macarthur region this afternoon.

Police swarmed into Peppin Crescent in Airds at about 2pm, after calls to Triple-zero about a gunman on the loose.

They arrived to find well known local man, Robert Lagatt, reeling with cuts to his head and hands.

Police advise caution in describing him as a victim, as they know him well.

He was obviously involved, they say, but whatever his role in it - he clearly lost.

Some witnesses describe seeing him getting hit with the butt of a shotgun.

Others say it was not a gun, but the subsequent manhunt was enough to force the lockdown of nearby John Warby Public School.

A man was taken away in handcuffs, but police will not go as far as to say he is a suspect.

At this stage, they are treating him only as a witness, and they are interviewing him tonight.
