Brave girl heading home after nine months in hospital

FIRST ON 7: A brave five-year-old girl is finally on her way home after spending nine months in the Mater Children's Hospital.

Jessie Dugong had a partial foot amputation following an aggressive infection.

The young fighter has been through a brave battle, but she's remained a happy little girl.

Jessie fell on a fishing trip and her right foot became infected. The bug spread affecting her lungs, eyes and brain. It was so aggressive, part of her foot had to be amputated.

"It's the sort of bug she got MRSA (and it) more commonly causes mild skin infections," Jessie’s doctor explained.

"We Didn't know it was going to come that far. We thought we'd come for a check up," mum Carla Waldan said.

Jessie's been in hospital for nine months, undergoing multiple operations and intensive physiotherapy.

Finally, she's heading home to Doomadgee - a community around 500 kilometres north of Mt Isa.

"Now I can be ready to go home," an upbeat Jessie told 7News.

The Mater Foundation paid for this walker and wheelchair for Jessie.

The Mater Little Miracles 5k's walk is being held next month at South Bank and they need support.

Money raised from the walk will go towards equipment, treatment and research programs at the Mater Mothers and Children's Hopsital to help patients like Jessie.
