Gunmen hold up Melbourne Hotel

Three masked men held up a hotel in Melbourne's southeast in the early hours of this morning.

One patron told 7News he had two guns pointed at his head during the terrifying raid on the Boundary Hotel in East Bentleigh shortly before 4am.

The man, keen to protect his identity, said he was in the gaming area of the venue when three balaclava-clad bandits, armed with a rifle, revolver and sawn-off shotgun, stormed the venue demanding cash.

Two female bar staff were forced to hand over a 'significant' amount of cash from gaming machines and cash registers, while eight patrons were ordered to lie on the floor.

"I heard screaming," the anonymous gambler explained. "I heard 'get on the floor, get on the floor'.

"I looked down the entrance hall and people started flocking to the floor.

"They were telling staff to open the machines. They couldn't get into the safe, they were jumping counters, they were swearing at people."

The group then fled on foot through the car park entrance of the hotel towards East Boundary Road.

Armed Crime Task Force detectives examined a car found dumped in nearby Caleb Street.

Acting Senior Sergeant Paul Lloyd said police are reviewing CCTV footage.

Investigators are yet to draw any links with five other armed robberies carried out over the past month.

The men are described as being of average build and height. They were wearing dark hooded jackets, runners and tracksuit pants.

The Boundary Hotel has been robbed five times in the past five years.
