Live Coverage: Melbourne Cup Parade

Crowds are lining up for the annual Melbourne Cup parade in the city's CBD today.

Champions, past and present, human and equine, along with jockeys and trainers starring in the 2011 Emirates Melbourne Cup will wind their way along Swanston Street to Federation Square, bringing the centre of the city to a standstill.

You can watch it live here at midday.

Among the crowds is one very keen Brisbane couple who battled Qantas grounding to make the event.

Anne and Barry Adams were at the races in Brisbane on Saturday when they discovered their Qantas flight had been cancelled.

"Even to get here it was a mammoth effort because we booked to leave on Qantas yesterday morning at 6am," Mrs Adams told AAP.

"We had to then get on to a Jetstar flight that cost nearly $1,000 for the two of us."

The couple will spend a week in Melbourne, going to the Cup, Oaks Day and Stakes day, and weren't about to miss it.
