ICAC investigates 'systemic corruption' in local councils

An investigation into 88 councils and 22 government authorities by ICAC has reportedly revealed 'systemic corruption in the public sector'.

Public sector workers and officials received iPhones, wine, electronic goods and holidays delivered to their home, reports revealed today.

Steve Campbell, assistant to the commissioner in the two-year investigation told the media their findings were “just the tip of the iceberg,”

"In truth, the corruption is systemic and responsibility lies within the public sector itself," Mr Campbell said.

Ballina, Bathurst, Broken Hill, Burwood, Botany, Lithgow, Liverpool, Narrandera, Orange, Sydney City, Walgett, Waverley and Yass Valley Councils along with the RTA are the authorities whose officials received the gifts worth the most.

Their corruption is expected to run over $116,000.

"This brings apparent corruption actually uncovered by Operation Jarek to a figure over $1.5 million," Mr Campbell said.

"Gift vouchers totalling $64,380 were given to and accepted by public officials working for the overwhelming majority of 110 authorities."

ICAC revealed that suppliers developed a sales pitch to public officials where they were rewarded for big orders.

"The bigger the order, the better the gift," Mr Campbell said.
