More asbestos compensation calls forecast

ABC November 8, 2009, 8:11 am

A Queensland support group for people with asbestos-related illnesses says it is pleased about a bail out of the James Hardie compensation fund.

The Federal and New South Wales governments will loan Hardies more than $300 million to top up the scheme.

Ray Colbert from the Asbestos Related Diseases Support Society says many sick Queenslanders would have suffered if the fund ran out of money.

"Queensland, because of the amount of people that come to Queensland to retire, has got one of the largest groups of claimants against the Hardies fund because we've got people from all over Australia coming up here to settle," he said.

"I would call on Queensland to be aware that there could be a greater call for compensation through Queensland system, ie Work Cover and other groups if need should arise again."
