Gangster opens fire in real estate agency

North Asia correspondent Mark Willacy, ABC November 7, 2009, 9:48 am

A Japanese gangster has walked into a real estate agency in Yokohama and shot three people before turning the gun on himself.

Police say the gunman walked into the real estate agency, told those inside he was a member of the Yakuza (Japanese mafia) and began firing.

He shot two people in the neck and one in the chest.

An hour-and-a-half after police surrounded the building the 62-year-old gunman shot himself in the head.

All three of his victims survived and are being treated in hospital.

Police say the motive for the shootings remains a mystery.
