Investigation launched into former NT doctor

ABC November 6, 2009, 5:44 pm

The Queensland Government has promised a full investigation into concerns about the registration and performance of an overseas-trained doctor who used to work in the Northern Territory.

Zimbabwean-trained Dr John Chibanda has been working at the Emerald Hospital in Central Queensland since late 2007.

Prior to that he had worked at the Katherine Hospital in the Northern Territory.

The Queensland Health Minister, Paul Lucas, says there have been about a dozen complaints from staff and patients about Dr Chibanda's work.

Last month, local staff discovered Dr Chibanda had been convicted of falsifying a death certificate in Zimbabwe.

Mr Lucas says the doctor claims the conviction was quashed but he should have told the medical board about it.

"I'm concerned about the level of disclosure made to the board," he said.

Dr Chibanda has been stood down.

He has declined to comment.
