Schoolies asked to pay to party

ABC November 5, 2009, 8:36 am

A group of Gold Coast residents says schoolies should be charged a fee to party in the city.

Neal Hammond, the area coordinator of a Broadbeach Neighbourhood Watch committee, says the money could go towards security, entertainment and clean-up costs.

He says the service fee would not be high enough to discourage schoolies from visiting the Gold Coast.

"The public are sort of saying why do we have to continually pay for other folk?" Mr Hammond said.

"We say that kindly because we would hope that schoolies come to the Gold Coast to enjoy themselves.

"It's the cost of the entertainment and the clean-up afterwards and perhaps alcohol-fuelled activities that cost the public dearly."

He says many people in the community believe a user-pay system is appropriate.

"They do receive an ID with part of their bookings and what have you - a $20 ... service fee .... certainly would help cover the costs that are there for extra police," Mr Hammond said.

He says the service fee proposal was included in a submission to a federal parliamentary inquiry looking into the impact of violence on young Australians.

Gold Coast Tourism spokesman Ben Pole says he does not know whether a service fee would deter schoolies from celebrating in the city.

"If that's the dollar amount that this particular community will keep them and their community satisfied with the event and indeed allow them to make it a sustainable event for their region, then I guess that's the dollar amount they want to put on it," he said.
