Greens want state human rights laws

ABC November 4, 2009, 5:29 am

The Tasmanian Greens say a Charter of Human Rights should be included in legislation to set up an anti-corruption watchdog.

Debate on the Integrity Commission Bill began in the lower house last night.

The Opposition parties are angry they will only have the final days of the parliamentary year to scrutinise the proposed law.

Greens Leader, Nick McKim, told State Parliament that Labor had failed to deliver on human rights protection.

"I'd be happier with this Bill if there was a Charter of Human Rights in place and quite frankly I think it's very sad that Labor hasn't delivered a Charter of Human Rights in Tasmania for after 11 years in majority government in this place," he said.

Mr McKim said he was also concerned the word "corrupt" does not appear anywhere in the bill.
