Promising signs for Hendra virus treatment

Louisa Rebgetz, ABC November 3, 2009, 5:24 pm

An Australian scientist says he has achieved a breakthrough in treating people who contract Hendra virus.

The CSIRO's Dr Martyn Jeggo says a group of scientists has developed a human cell line producing antibodies against the potentially fatal virus.

He says it is in its early stages and has only been produced under laboratory conditions.

However, it shows promising signs for the development of a vaccine in the future, he says.

We demonstrated the effectiveness of this treatment on laboratory models and we got good protection, particularly if we can administer this antibody early post-infection.
